Markdown Example
Frontmatter
Each markdown page contains “frontmatter” that helps Hugo produce the expected output. The frontmatter for this page is below:
---
title: "Markdown Example"
pre: "1. "
weight: 10
date: 2018-08-24T10:53:26-05:00
---
Each item has a particular feature:
- title: This gives the title of the page in the menu to the left.
- pre: This is the prefix before the name of the page
- weight: This is the sorting weight of the page. Pages in the menu are sorted by weight, lowest to highest. Generally each page is given a weight that is 10 times its prefix, so that multiple pages can be included between each base page without needing to fix the weights.
- date: this is the date that the page was last edited (it is typically forgotten). Any pages with a date in the future will not be rendered as output (this allows the creation of “draft” pages).
On chapter pages, usually named _index.md
, a different frontmatter is used:
+++
title = "Instructor Resources"
date = 2018-08-24T10:53:05-05:00
weight = 1050
chapter = true
+++
Again, most items there are the same as described above. The chapter item tells Hugo to use a slightly different CSS layout on the rendered page.
For Reveal.js slides, the frontmatter is as follows:
---
type: "reveal"
hidden: true
---
These items are unique:
- type: this tells Hugo to render this page as a Reveal.js page, which will use a different template
- hidden: this will remove this item from the menu on the left. This can be added to any page.
There are many other items that can be added. See Hugo Frontmatter for details.
Yes, I realize that most pages are using the YAML format for frontmatter (as indicated by the ---
surrounding the block as described in the Hugo documentation), but the chapter pages are using TOML (surrounded by +++
instead). I did this simply because the template pages were set that way, but not for any particular reason.

Notice
The old mechanism for notices overriding the block quote syntax (>>>
) has been deprecated. Notices are now handled via a dedicated plugin called
Markdown Notices. However, the old syntax works with this template and is used in a number of places, so it remains in this documentation.
The notice shortcode shows 4 types of disclaimers to help you structure your page.

Code
Inline code
Wrap inline snippets of code with `
.
In this example, `<section></section>` should be wrapped as **code**.
Renders to:
In this example, <section></section>
should be wrapped as code.
HTML:
<p>In this example, <code><section></section></code> should be wrapped as <strong>code</strong>.</p>
Indented code
Or indent several lines of code by at least four spaces, as in:
// Some comments line 1 of code line 2 of code line 3 of code
Renders to:
// Some comments
line 1 of code
line 2 of code
line 3 of code
HTML:
<pre>
<code>
// Some comments

Block code “fences”
Use “fences” ```
to block in multiple lines of code.
``` markup Sample text here... ```
Sample text here...
HTML:
<pre>
<code>Sample text here...</code>
</pre>
Syntax highlighting
GFM, or “GitHub Flavored Markdown” also supports syntax highlighting. To activate it, simply add the file extension of the language you want to use directly after the first code “fence”, ```js
, and syntax highlighting will automatically be applied in the rendered HTML. For example, to apply syntax highlighting to JavaScript code:
```js grunt.initConfig({ assemble: { options: { assets: 'docs/assets', data: 'src/data/*.{json,yml}', helpers: 'src/custom-helpers.js', partials: ['src/partials/**/*.{hbs,md}'] }, pages: { options: { layout: 'default.hbs' }, files: { './': ['src/templates/pages/index.hbs'] } } } }; ```
Renders to:
grunt.initConfig({
assemble: {
options: {
assets: 'docs/assets',
data: 'src/data/*.{json,yml}',
helpers: 'src/custom-helpers.js',
partials: ['src/partials/**/*.{hbs,md}']
},
pages: {
options: {
layout: 'default.hbs'
},
files: {
'./': ['src/templates/pages/index.hbs']
}
}
}
};
Fenced code can also have line numbers, highlighting, and more.
```js {linenos=table,hl_lines=[8,"15-17"],linenostart=199} grunt.initConfig({ assemble: { options: { assets: 'docs/assets', data: 'src/data/*.{json,yml}', helpers: 'src/custom-helpers.js', partials: ['src/partials/**/*.{hbs,md}'] }, pages: { options: { layout: 'default.hbs' }, files: { './': ['src/templates/pages/index.hbs'] } } } }; ```
Keyboard Keys
Keyboard keys can be indicated using the <kbd>
tag.
<kbd>Tab</kbd>
Renders to:
Tables
Tables are created by adding pipes as dividers between each cell, and by adding a line of dashes (also separated by bars) beneath the header. Note that the pipes do not need to be vertically aligned.
| Option | Description |
| ------ | ----------- |
| data | path to data files to supply the data that will be passed into templates. |
| engine | engine to be used for processing templates. Handlebars is the default. |
| ext | extension to be used for dest files. |
Renders to:
Option | Description |
---|---|
data | path to data files to supply the data that will be passed into templates. |
engine | engine to be used for processing templates. Handlebars is the default. |
ext | extension to be used for dest files. |
And this HTML:
<table>
<tr>
<th>Option</th>
<th>Description</th>
</tr>
<tr>
<td>data</td>
<td>path to data files to supply the data that will be passed into templates.</td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td>engine</td>
<td>engine to be used for processing templates. Handlebars is the default.</td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td>ext</td>
<td>extension to be used for dest files.</td>
</tr>
</table>
Right aligned text
Adding a colon on the right side of the dashes below any heading will right align text for that column.
| Option | Description |
| ------:| -----------:|
| data | path to data files to supply the data that will be passed into templates. |
| engine | engine to be used for processing templates. Handlebars is the default. |
| ext | extension to be used for dest files. |
Links
Basic link
[Assemble](http://assemble.io)
Renders to (hover over the link, there is no tooltip):
HTML:
<a href="http://assemble.io">Assemble</a>
Add a title
[Upstage](https://github.com/upstage/ "Visit Upstage!")
Renders to (hover over the link, there should be a tooltip):
HTML:
<a href="https://github.com/upstage/" title="Visit Upstage!">Upstage</a>
Named Anchors
Named anchors enable you to jump to the specified anchor point on the same page. For example, each of these chapters:
# Table of Contents
* [Chapter 1](#chapter-1)
* [Chapter 2](#chapter-2)
* [Chapter 3](#chapter-3)
will jump to these sections:
## Chapter 1 <a id="chapter-1"></a>
Content for chapter one.
## Chapter 2 <a id="chapter-2"></a>
Content for chapter one.
## Chapter 3 <a id="chapter-3"></a>
Content for chapter one.
NOTE that specific placement of the anchor tag seems to be arbitrary. They are placed inline here since it seems to be unobtrusive, and it works.
Mathjax
This template supports Mathjax.
Inline Example: $T = k * (SLOC)^{(1+x)}$
Renders to:
$T = k * (SLOC)^{(1+x)}$
$$
T = k * (SLOC)^{(1+x)}
$$
Renders to:
$$ T = k * (SLOC)^{(1+x)} $$
Images
Images have a similar syntax to links but include a preceding exclamation point.
![Minion](https://octodex.github.com/images/minion.png)
or
![Alt text](https://octodex.github.com/images/stormtroopocat.jpg "The Stormtroopocat")
Like links, Images also have a footnote style syntax
Alternative usage : note images
![Alt text][id]
With a reference later in the document defining the URL location:
[id]: https://octodex.github.com/images/dojocat.jpg "The Dojocat"
Resizing image
Add HTTP parameters width
and/or height
to the link image to resize the image. Values are CSS values (default is auto
).
![Minion](https://octodex.github.com/images/minion.png?width=20pc)
![Minion](https://octodex.github.com/images/minion.png?height=50px)
![Minion](https://octodex.github.com/images/minion.png?height=50px&width=300px)
Add CSS classes
Add a HTTP classes
parameter to the link image to add CSS classes. shadow
and border
are available but you could define other ones.
![stormtroopocat](https://octodex.github.com/images/stormtroopocat.jpg?classes=shadow)
![stormtroopocat](https://octodex.github.com/images/stormtroopocat.jpg?classes=border)
